The Importance of Faith

In this world, there are many religions and “people of faith.” The politically correct view in our day and age is to accept all “faiths” as equal and good and believe that all religions lead to God. However, the Bible reveals that the only faith that is acceptable to God is the faith that believes in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. The only religion then that is pleasing to God is one where the members trust in and follow Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” This verse is followed by a list of Old Testament people who simply took God at His Word and believed what He promised He would do whether they saw it in their lifetime or not. The God they believed in was the Creator of the Universe, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the great “I Am of the burning bush that Moses saw and the Word made flesh that the Apostle John saw and handled, Jesus Christ. Faith must have an object and true faith that is acceptable to God always has as its object, Jesus Christ.

Faith is not a feeling or an emotion. It is a gift from God and it is objective; i.e., faith believes what God says in His Word, the Bible. Ephesians 2:8, 9 says, “for by grace are you saved through “faith” and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God not of works, lest any man should boast.” When God gives this gift to an unbelieving person, His grace opens the heart and eyes to see Christ and the sinner exercises the gift of faith in Christ to be saved. As you read through the New Testament, you never see Jesus or the Apostles accepting or approving of a faith in other religious leaders or shrines or human effort. The object of faith, if a person has a God given faith, is always Jesus, nothing more and nothing less.

Today, many believe in Allah, Buddah, Hindu gods, nature, themselves, etc. Even demons believe in God (James 2:19). But none of these faiths lead to salvation. For a sinner to be right with God, he must be justified (declared righteous). A person is justified by faith (Rom. 3:28) and not by works and that faith always is in Jesus Christ who was the substitute for His people, the One who paid for our sins. Whoever has faith in Jesus believes that only Jesus could satisfy God’s law and make a sinner acceptable to God. Any faith that believes that sinners can be accepted by God based on good works, baptism, church membership, religious activities etc., is not God- given faith but man- made faith that bypasses the sacrifice of Christ which is the only basis for salvation.

Today, take a personal inventory of your Faith. Who is the object of your faith? What are you trusting in to be accepted by God? Do you believe what God says in His Word and is His Word your only authority for living? True faith believes in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness of sins and believes Him throughout life to guide and keep the child of God from falling.

Jesus said, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow Me. I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.” (John 10:27, 28).

Thank God for His gracious provisions. He gave us Jesus and the faith to believe in Him. The Apostle Peter made it clear in his sermon about Jesus Christ in Acts 4:12 when he said, ”Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Be sure that the object of your faith is Jesus Christ and no one or nothing else.
