Gods plan of salvation includes good works as well as justification. Being religious is not good works. When God's grace works in a sinner, faith is exercised in Jesus and then good works follow. The life transforming new birth puts the saved one "In Christ" and the Holy Spirit indwells and empowers him to do the will of God. Good works are the fruits of the spirit and the result of God's saving power that released a sinner from bondage to sin and made him a slave of righteousness. Now the sinner saved by grace can put off the old ways and put on the new man who is righteous and can live righteously.
