Jesus was sent on a mission by His father to identify with the human race. His birth by the Virgin Mary began His identification with humans and His baptism by John the Baptist continued it. Through the unusual reversal of a sinner (John) baptizing the sinless Jesus, the Lord physically symbolized in water baptism what He would do when He went to the cross three years later. The baptism of Jesus was not a baptism of repentance for Jesus had no send to repent of! His baptism was a picture of His identification with sinful man through His death, burial and resurrection.
